Baku Takahashi
Japan
Born in Fukuoka, Japan, in 1986. After studying glass art at Tama Art University, Baku Takahashi worked as an assistant to glass artist Yoshihiko Takahashi and as a staff member at Azumino Glass Studio. In 2015, he established his studio in Fukuoka, where he produces three-dimensional glass sculptures. Alongside his artistic practice, he co-founded the glassware brand "TOUMEI" in 2016 with fellow glass artist Tomoko Wada.
His work begins with visual images from memory - landscapes, objects created by others, or images from the internet. Digging from these fragments, Baku sketches them out while slightly distorting them in a relaxed state of mind. He recreated these fragments through a combination of hot and cold work with solid glass - shaping each form whilst molten hot, before cutting, grinding and polishes before assembling them into other-worldly arrangements.
“I recreate my sketches into glass pieces, lining them up on my desk and freely combining them. During this process, I am careful not to be bound by the original context of my memories.”
