The Mystery of Mae Studio

30th November 22 - By Morten, Paper Collective

Artist Portraits

Mae Studio is the artistic project and pseudonym of an anonymous Paper Collective artist. The flowing abstractions and rich painted textures create soft geometric compositions that are almost sculptural elements on the wall.

I’m inspired by people, their movement and bond between them.

Mae Studio

Through a long and productive collaboration with Paper Collective, Mae Studio has close to 20 artworks in the current Paper Collective collection. But what do we really know about the anonymous artist behind the pseudonym. Read on as we try to extract some more information from our mysterious Paper Collective artist in this latest studio visit.

Nikolai:
Although working under a pseudonym, can you share a little information about yourself and your background?

Mae Studio:
As an academic artist who has spent over a decade working in the fashion industry, at one point of my life, I have decided to get back to art and do it full time.

Nikolai:
Please tell us a bit about the inspiration for your art.

Mae Studio:
I’m inspired by people, their movement and bond between them, capturing the opposites, contrast, wether in colour or shapes, that complement eachother within a given space.

Nikolai:
Can you describe your work process? Eg. Do you start with sketches or do you start with a blank canvas and flow more freely?

Mae Studio:
I never start with the sketches. I imagine the shapes in my mind and I project them straight at the paper or canvas. This often turns into a complex process with lots of layering and ‘searching’ while working, which results in a deeper composition, that however simple and ‘perfect’ shows the working process.

Nikolai:
Can you tell us a bit about your collections for Paper Collective?

Mae Studio:
ll pieces I have made for paper collective have something in common. A simple yet playful abstract shapes that could be endlessly interpret by viewer. Contrast of dark and light, organic and sharp, soft and strong are the main elements I’m trying to express.
